Just a good guy or thinking of dumping me?

I am 20 and he is 21. Dating for 1yr. We love each other but for reasons outside of our control, we haven't been seeing each other as frequently as we would like. Yesterday he tells me that he's finally free (he graduated from his program) and wants to spend more time with me. He follows that up with "you are the coolest chick I know, and if we ever break up, I wanna stay friends". Help?

I'd honestly just ask what he meant. I'm sure he didn't mean it in a bad way. My boyfriend says stupid stuff like that. Like hell say something like "if we break up or something" and it makes me upset but he doesn't mean that he's thinking of breaking up with me, he just doesn't know how to say the right words sometimes.
