I need HELP! Please!!!

So tonight is the first night home from the hospital and my nipples are beyond over it. I'm nursing on demand but I almost cried when I saw my little guy rooting so I stuck a pacifier in his mouth until I built up the courage to try again. Now I'm thinking just let him use it to get through the first night but would I be depriving him of nourishment? Wouldn't he cry if he were hungry and spit out the pacifier? I don't even know if I have milk yet. I just had him on Monday so we are both still learning and I don't want to confuse him. I have a shield but I don't think it works since it still hurts when I use it, and I have lanolin but it hasn't had a chance to work its magic yet. I'm just worried going to see a consultant soon and a breast feeding fellow mom will be over tomorrow I just need to make it through the night. So what do you think let him keep it or suck it up let him nurse he may be hungry or you're further confusing him?
