First solid food!?

I was wondering what food did you first introduce to your baby? Is it really necessary to first introduce baby cereal or Should i skip cereal and try to give my baby puree veggies or fruits?

My daughters first food was mashed bananas with breast milk. So far, she's tried bananas, green beans, peaches and sweet potatoes and loves them all! I'm not giving her rice cereal. I space out new foods every 3-4 days and she only has them after I breastfeed her as a "snack". The food, aside from the bananas, have been Gerber first foods.

Cereal is not necessary at all. It can be skipped and our pediatrician recommended skipping and going straight to purées.  First food will be avocado when she turns 6 months in a few weeks.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that there’s no medical evidence that starting solids in any particular order has any advantages. 
As a dietitian, i feel vegetables are the best starting place.

I made sweet potatoe for my girl on Thanksgiving which she loved!!. I hope to make cereal for her this weekend but for now she'll stay with purée until then

We did rusk at first and now sweet potato, banana and avocado. Sweet potato is his favourite :)

I don't understand why so many people feed their babies cereals right away. To me veggies make the most sense. Then grains and fruits and meats. My daughters first taste was butternut squash. We only give her little tastes. No real eating yet

We did oatmeal (used earth's best whole grain) per our pediatrician's recommendation, but after a few weeks got the go ahead for other foods.  We started with avocado puréed with a little breast milk to make it mostly smooth (used my immersion blender).  He LOVED it!
