Why are over eating disorders made into a joke and treated as laziness whereas an under eating disorder calls for medical help?

How come undereating disorders have well known names, but the former does not?

I'm genuinely curious because they're both deadly.

It does have a name its called binge eating disorder. And is classified in the dsm in the same category as other eating disorders. I think the stigma associated with it is different.

if we're gonna be honest, it's because our culture has been cruel and disrespectful to fat people with eating disorders. we're perceived as liars, lazy, unhealthy, undesirable, or simply people who have no self control.

thin people, even with EDs are treated so much better than fat folx with EDs. fat folx who lose a lot of weight are seen as success stories, full stop

Under eating disorders aren't always seen as "Oh, she needs help". Many many maaannnyyy people see it as "disgusting", "attention seeking", "pathetic", and many people think fixing it is as simple as "eating a cheeseburger". Many people get ridiculed for being too skinny and having eating disorders.

Try being fat and having a restrictive eating disorder and being told it is "impossible" to have it because you are still classified was "overweight" at your lowest weight.

I think because it's more uncommon that an under eating disorder. More people are familiar and knowledgeable about the typical eating disorders like anerexia and bulimia. Which leads to ignorance like you explained. Both are equally as bad for ones health and both should be taken seriously.

The over eating is called Binge Eating Disorder (BED). I think a lot of people think it's just a joke. It's a serious condition that causes many problems. It's very rarely that the patient even wants to eat that much, it becomes a stress and coping mechanism, same as what happens to those who have under eating disorders (Anorexia) or those who binge and then purge (Bulimia). I was diagnosed with Anorexia a few years back and it was brutal. I lost 25 pounds in 4 weeks at one point. But pretty much everyone, including my parents just got angry with me. They said I was selfish, faking, and attention seeking. So it goes for all eating disorders. There's very little compassion.

I personally think it's because if you have someone of avarege weight and they gain 100 pounds through overeating, it's probably not going to kill them, whereas if you have the same person lose 100 pounds through undereating, that will most definitely kill them. Just my opinion
