When to get the Epidural?

Question

Getting closer to due date so I'm planning ahead. I had the epidural last time but I believe I got it so late because it had no effect on me what so ever, I was in so much pain!! the advantage of this was that I knew when to push so I had my daughter out in 2 pushes.

I still want the epidural however, I don't want to be in pain and still get it in time but also still want to know when to push. When is the best time to get the epidural.???
I'm open for you to Share your experiences or opinions?

With my first 2 I got my epidural at 4-5 cm. I couldn't feel anything during delivery. I didn't get an epidural with my third because my second epidural went wrong and caused a spinal headache so I didn't want that again. If you're going to get one I'd say the best time would be around 4-5 cm. Good luck.

I had mine pretty early, when I was 4cm. My contractions were going super strong and very close together. BUT a little after the epidural they started to slow down. They eventually slowed so much they game me pitocin to pick them back up again (Just like the business of being born if you've seen it).
I was able to push on instruction, but couldn't feel the contractions. I could feel the pressure from my pushing though. 
If I were to do it again I would endure the contractions a little longer before getting the epidural to hopefully avoid that slow down & pitocin.

I'm somewhat having the same dilemma, in that I'm SUPER scared and nervous abt how this birth is gonna go and if I'll get epidural on time or not. With my first I had it, got to hospital at 4cm and asked for it straight away, it really made a difference and the whole experience was peaceful. With my second it was awful, full on labour started at 11 and he was born at 1:20 so I think it was all so fast that the pain was just horrendous. Begged for the epidural but the anaesthetoligist wasn't available, so unwillingly gave birth naturally. That experience scared me so much that now I'm petrified and I don't want to induce just for the sake of having a guaranteed epidural but at the same time I can't tell u how scared I am. And then reading stories of people getting it too early and it wearing off when the pain was really bad...there's so many scenarios, I know I'm over thinking it but I can't help it...i know I won't even be able to control the circumstances when it comes to it but can't help but over think!
