Is it okay to read your daughter's diary?

Hypothetical situation based on a conversation with friends about the relationship between age and privacy. Comment why you voted a certain way and what age it becomes inappropriate to snoop through you kid's belongings.

I'd say yes *if* I believed her safety were at issue & I needed that information to take effective action. Keeping a kid safe trumps privacy/respect. Otherwise no, I wouldn't snoop.

I think writing in a diary can be very cathartic for young women. I know even though I wrote things about sexuality / anger etc I was really just exploring myself and my own feelings. A mother reading it may be horrified or worried when in reality I was just an average, square, terrified young girl trying to figure herself out through a veil of hormones. It's so much more important to harbour a relationship where she feels she can come to you and talk to you if she needs it, and going through her diary will only create extreme anger and distrust towards you. If you're concerned or worried, try reaching out to her- and if it fails the first, second, third, or fiftieth time never stop trying, because she notices.

Only if I felt like I needed to. If she were showing signs of something going on. I'd only do it to protect her and if necessary. But I'm also going to try and be open minded. I don't want to be a hypocrite. I want my daughter or son to trust me and can speak to me about anything regardless of how I might feel.

No. my mom used to do that all the time and then lie to my face like "omg you still keep a diary?? I had no idea!"  And she's a really bad liar. I wasn't a bad kid/teen either. Especially in 8th grade when I didn't do anything for fun. I barely had any friends. My mom would do it bc she was "bored" in her own words. It made me feel like I couldn't trust her. If I was a bad kid and I was getting into bad things, then yeah I would understand.

I would only do that if I was honest to God worried about her safety. I'd have to have a hell of a lot of probable cause to do that...

It dependss if you feel like there is something to be searching for and they won't tell you. Drugs, boyfriends, etc. What ever to keep them safe.

Only ok under extraordinary circumstances (regardless of age) eg if she is in danger, missing, in a coma, a crime victim, suicidal, or dead.
