Dilation check painful?!

Hi all.  I have read of so many ladies being checked for dilation with no mention of pain.  Well I tell you, I got checked last Thursday at 38w+4 and it hurt so bad. 1cm dilated and 30% effaced.  She asked if I wanted a sweep and I declined as I was already in pain and thought it was better to let things progress naturally.  I had quite a bit of bleeding after which the doc said was normal.  It was followed by 4 days of brown spotting and I could barely walk for 2 days after....I felt bruised and broken!  I am so nervous for my appointment coming up Thursday if baby doesn't arrive.   Am I just unlucky or anyone else experience pain as well?
