Is saying 'you're such a cute couple' actually a real compliment?

So this is just a thought I've had since I was like 15. I don't see why people say that 2 people in a relationship are a 'cute couple' or whatever. Like I know what it means but at the same time, if the two of you broke up they would say it to whoever you or they got with next. So is it just an empty compliment or just something your expected to say?
