Does the term 'late miscarriage' get to anyone else?

I just immediately think of miscarriage as something that happens first trimester. It seems a little strange that a baby can be born up to 24 weeks and still consider it a miscarriage. Do you think they should change the name?

My babies died at 18weeks in-utero. I had to go to the hospital, get induced and birth them. Then I had to go to the funeral home and pick out a little tiny urn to bring home, when I should have been bringing home two beautiful daughters.

Because they were born at 18w instead of 20w (the stillborn limit in my state). They did not get a death certificate, I'm ineligible for the tax credit for grieving moms, and my secondary insurance didn't cover the time I needed off after birth. I know these things seem material but trust me, it is expensive and a huge slap in the face to pay a $5000 hospital bill when you don't get to bring your child home.

So yes, I wish there was a different term for it. Or I wish there was a lower age. My daughters were born. They were human. They deserve the recognition and respect of any child.

I'm almost certain after 22 weeks (maybe even 20 weeks) death in utero is considered a still birth because mom has to go through labor. The fetus must be born, it cannot simply be absorbed by the mother's body.

My doctor told me that any pregnancy loss at 20 weeks and on from that is considered a stillborn.. they give you a death certificate and you have to make formal arrangements to be done with the baby's remains.

As someone who had a misdiagnosis recently of something that'd be fatal to my baby I can only try to express how painful it is to hear it would just be a miscarriage.. even at 23 weeks.
Miscarriage is something most people associate with first trimester due to second trimester miscarriage is not as common.

It is a medical term, but it breaks your heart to hear because it feels like your loss is less significant even though you know 24 weeks is viability.

I don't think they're called miscarriages at 24 weeks. Anything after 20 weeks is a stillbirth. Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I start my OB class this month so I'll know more soon 😂) but I'm sure that's what I read somewhere.

A baby only can survive out of the womb after 28 weeks. Before that it could be considered a miscarriage, since there is no way to make that baby survive.
