I don't smoke, however a friend of mine did and her doctor actually told her that it'd be safer for her to just cut back than to quit cold turkey because of the withdrawal and stress shed experience. Her baby is super healthy.
I don't recommend smoking while pregnant though.

Here's the thing- just Cause some smoked and their babies "turned out fine"(the most idiotic statement by the way), doesn't mean it's ok, nor safe.
I never worn a seat belt before my daughter was born, and "I survived ". Does that mean that driving without a seat belt is safe? No it doesn't. 
It's a proven fact that smoking while pregnant can and often DOES lots of damage. The imitate effects are misscarige,  pre term labor, low birth and stillbirths. The long term effects  (the ones u don't see until much later), babies with defects in their lungs, having difficulty breathing, and ADD.

Most doctors will tell a pregnant woman to cut back smoking instead of going cold turkey as the stress can cause great stress on mom and baby.

I quit cold turkey while ttc because I read studies of chemicals staying within your bloodstream and body up to two months after your last cigarette. That scared me enough to quit asap. It took another few months to get pregnant after that.

Aside from two days of stress, it wasn't that bad. In the end, it truly is mine over matter. I smoked half a pack to a pack a day for over ten years. This was my first true attempt at quitting.

The book "The Easyway to Quit Smoking" definitely helped.

I would cut back if I was you then stop by the 2nd trimester at the very latest. Before my first I was smoking 20 cigarettes a day and so was my husband. Then the minute I found out I was pregnant at 4 weeks I went to 3 a day and quit within that week also my husband did to which made it a lot easier. I mean after i had one cigarette I felt so guilty knowing I'm harming my baby so I quit. I didn't want to risk it. If you have the will power you can do anything for your baby.Just think of how much damage you are doing will make you sick of the sight of cigarettes. Good luck x

Ugh, I hate the argument "well most doctors...." unless you know "most doctors".... then how do you know?! "Most doctors tell pregnant women to slowly cut off and not stop cold turkey" I guess my doctor isn't
Most doctors bc he tells women to stop cold turkey. He told me to stop all of my medications cold turkey, and my pregnancy is going fine. So, I guess it all depends on your doctor and what rules they believe and follow. Plus, smoking, has already been proven to cause harm to the fetus/baby. Just stop, why risk it....  I have waited too long for this baby to do anything that may harm him.
