How can this be okay?

I'm currently in the hospital with extremely painful contractions at 3 minutes apart. I'm 38w 6d but my body isn't dilating my cervix... I've had these contractions since yesterday (2/1) at 1pm. And my doctor doesn't think I'm in labor! How can that be? And why can't they help move things along if I'm at term and so close to the 39 week mark?

They try to not induce anymore unless totally necessary. Sorry you're going through this

Unfortunately, before 39 weeks (some hospitals it's even later) it's too much of a liability for doctors to help move things along without REAL reason. Blame the sue happy women of the US. And if your contractions aren't productive, your water hasn't broken, and you're not dilated past a 4, they have no reason to keep you. It's really disheartening, but really common. Hang in there, mama, hopefully things pick up.

The same thing happened to me when I was pregnant with my son. I believe I was 38 weeks. I started having contractions so we went to the hospital after them checking me a few times they sent me home but said "you'll probably be back in the morning because you're definitely in early labor". They were wrong. I ended up having to be induced at 41 weeks because I hadn't dilated anymore.

Sounds like prodromal labor, walk, squats, sex etc. No reason to start an induction right now.

Mindy,  I'm sorry you not feeling so well, I'm going througth the same thing. A week ago I stared to have terrible contractions and I felft something was coming down on my vagina so we rush to the hospital. I was them 38W & 1days. I was dilate 4cm but I was not getting pass that. The pain was horrible but they end up sending me home. Its been a week now and I'm still in much much pain and frustrate so they have me schedule for inducion tomorrow night as I will be them 39 weeks. I can't wait! Try taking hot shower, that relax me. I had the same thing happen to me and got sent home! I had to be induced later on (they do it when you're overdue and my baby was getting too big) had him at 40w6d
