it's like I gave birth twice in one day... here is my crazy birth story
My doctor told me that with all that I went through during childbirth, I really should have birthed 2 babies that day. The baby that I did birth was born with something so rare from birth trauma. Let me explain...
I had GD so I was set to be induced on my due date, 12-23-16. We went in the day before to have a gel placed to help speed up labor. On Thursday I was already dialating so we were sent home to see if I went into labor naturally. I did start to have contractions at 3am but was due at the hospital for indictiion at 5am anyway so we went on to the hospital and began pictocin at around 7am. Contractions began and everything was going well. I received my epidural around 3 or 4 in the evening and at around 5:30 it was time to start pushing. I pushed for about 2 hours and we could see the top of her head but she would not come out. The midwife called the doctor to come attempt a vacuum. After the doctor arrived I began to fill sick and projectile vomited all over myself and then was given some medicine for that. The vacuum failed at all 3 attempts. It turned out that I have some sort of "band" in my vagina that literally made it impossible for her head to pass through. There was absolutely no way this baby was coming through. My doctor or midwife had never seen this in all of their years of practice. At this point the baby's head was visible and blood pressure was dropping so we went to do an urgent c-section. Thank god we did because her cord was wrapped around her neck twice. The c-section was especially rough because she had to be pulled back out of the birth canal. Once she was out I heard her cry and immediatley could tell something was wrong by the way the nurses were running around. They came and let me and my husband see her then said she had to be taken to the nicu immediately. A little bit later the neonatologist came to us to explain that she had a subgaleal hematoma which is bleeding between her skull and scalp. She would basically bleed to death if not controlled. In her first 12 hours of life she was heavily sedated and received a blood transfusion and had to be given several different things to help her body clot blood.
She bled uncontrollably out of her belly button and had to have surgiseal used on it to stop the bleeding. She was closely monitored for 2 or 3 days and she had a feeding tube and an IV in her belly button. She ended up staying a total of 7 days in the nicu and is truly our little miracle baby. The neonatologist told us this was only the 6th subgaleal hematoma he had seen in his career and hers was by far the worst. Since I had pushed her so far I developed all of your typical vaginal birth things such as hemorrhoids, etc. so I basically had to recover from both a vaginal and a c-section birth. Every second was worth it to have our amazingly perfect baby. She is now almost 7 weeks old and is home with us and is doing amazing. The loose blood in her scalp (you could feel the blood pocket on her head) has been absorbed by her body as we were told it should. She should have no lasting effects or conditions from this thank God. I'm sure I missed some details but a lot of that day/the days following is still a little blurry. That is my birth story.
