advice: when to go to the hospital...

So an l&d nure told me to only come in if contractions are 5 mins apart, last one min, and not able to walk or talk through them. Is that true to others? This just doesn't make sense to me. With my first born my contractions were completely bearable the whole time. So wth. I just don't know
