Membrane sweep?

Question

I am 39 weeks and would like to ask my doctor to perform a membrane sweep at my appt tomorrow. If she doesn't offer to do it, is it appropriate to ask? I've been dilated to a 1cm (hopefully I've progressed, won't know until tomorrow) and have been up to 75% effaced. I've also been having contractions on and off the past couple days. I just want to know if it's appropriate to ask. I don't want to seem like an idiot.

I asked many times but they won't do it if you aren't progressed enough.

It can't hurt, right? I've had it done with 3 pregnancies and it worked all 3 times, I had them within 24 hours. I only had to ask once and she didn't mind at all

I had a membrane sweep at 38 weeks and 39 weeks. Went into labor the same day as the second sweep. I was 3cm at 39 weeks.

I asked my doctor and she did :) moved me from a 3 to a 4! And I had the baby a week later!

Will someone explain to me what a membrane sweep is. I'm only 9 weeks and have a lot to learn.

I wouldn't do it. My first birth was spontaneous and the contractions were bearable. My second birth I had membranes swept on Thursday, and scheduled induction for Monday at 5am. My water broke at 2am on Monday. My contractions never started like they should've so I had to get pitocin. The contractions were absolutely horrendous. The pitocin was causing me to contract so hard and dilate so fast that my cervix started bleeding. The nurse had to stop my pitocin so I could stop bleeding and then start it back a little while later. This time I am going to try to wait for labor to start on its own even if I have to go past my due date. The induction was so hard on my body and my memory of the day is very hazy compared to my first birth. I believe if I wouldn't have gotten my membranes swept then I wouldn't have had my water to break without my body being ready for labor. I was so afraid I might have to have a csection if I didn't fully dilate before the 24 hr mark of my water being broke.
