What happens if I don't pass it? A bit worried i am over weight for my age and hieght currently 21weeks I haven't gained a single pound throughout my pregnancy. Worried because diabetes also runs in my family havenmy appointment in two weeks!

You don't get Gestational Diabetes from being overweight or from family history. It has to do with the hormones and your placenta blocking insulin from processing sugars correctly. If you have it, it will be gone once you deliver your baby. It can be managed by diet, some people need meds or insulin. It would make your pregnancy high risk. And you would be watched more closely especially towards the end. The good news is you'll get to see your baby more often! Don't listen to what anyone says about changing how you eat before the test. Fast if your doctor tells you. You don't want to cheat the test. If you have it, and you treat it you can have a perfect healthy baby. I was diagnosed at 24 weeks. Controlled by medication. Induced at 39 weeks and my son was a normal size 7lb14oz and had zero complications from the GD. Good luck!

If you fail you have to fast and go in for the 3 hour test. I am also overweight and diabetes runs in my family. My doctor thought I could have GD at 18 weeks and I had to do the challenge test, I passed it but just barely. I went in for my actual test yesterday and my doctor was already preparing me to fail. But I passed! With a lower count then the time before. My doctor said that fasting really helped in my case. Good luck!

Gestational diabetes doesn't have anything  to do with diabetes running in your family. It only developes during pregnancy and resolves right after you have your baby. If you have gestational diabetes your chances are increased for getting preeclampsia also you might gain more weight than you normally would during pregnancy and your baby will gain weight faster as well.

If you fail with a high number they usually just diagnose you with GD. If you fail with a boarder line number they will have you do a 3 hr test or let your take your blood sugar at home for a week. Then if you have it you have to test your suger and stick to a diet. Not fun but do able.

If you don't pass the one hour or three hour test, your doctor will help you figure out a diet and exercise plan that you must follow. It probably won't be easy, but it will be possible. If that doesn't work, you'll take insulin shots (quite rare). GD isn't the worst thing, but it's a pain. I did, luckily, pass my test.
