Take it out of his mouth once he's out cold. Simple. Also I knew a girl in highschool who would suck her thumb to concentrate when reading.

Every child is different. My 5 year old likes to sleep with an empty sippy cup in his mouth. My 2 year old goes to sleep without anything. My four year old sleeps with a blanket and sucks his knuckles.

My parents let me have a dummy (binkie?) until I was 4. For some reason, it was the only way I could sleep. It didn't ruin my teeth, and once I was rid of it, I never went to sucking my thumbs/fingers or needing any kind of comforter. I just grew out of it.

On the other hand, I was surprised to find, at age 20, how many of my friends still sucked their thumbs or fingers, or still had a comforter blanket hidden in their bed! The thumb/finger suckers had their dummies taken away at a young age, so swapped to their own hands. One person's fingers were so gross from constant sucking, it made me wretch the first time I noticed it.

I don't think dummies at 4 are the end of the world; but I do think that adults sucking their thumbs/fingers is weird AF.

I'm 26 and 10 weeks 6 days pregnant and when I don't feel well I'll grab the blanket my mum brought me home from hospital in to cuddle.
