Yes! Being from Northern Mexico, I always wondered why it was called a "third world country" or poor, when the urban areas are not half bad. Unfortunately the rural areas in southern states are still in extreme poverty. This is due to poor gov. structure and distribution of money. Most of it goes to states in the north. It also doesn't help that it is next to one of the wealthiest countries in the world 😩😂

Yeah I learned it in school. It's why I try not to use third world country to describe poorer countries.

Third world can be deemed as derogatory...I believe the term under developed country is used more these days

The majority that did not align tended to be developing nations so their relative lack of prosperity became synonymous with "third world". Some very prosperous nations would have been labeled, but they made a conscious decision vs "too poor to be included" decision.

Yes, but the expression is so used and known in US that I always use it in this app. The best terms are underdeveloped/emergent/delevoped country.

But now we use it to describe developing nations. This is kinda iffy. While yes it was used for the puropose in the picture during WWII now a days we don't use it for that. You can't see Caribbean countries on the map, while people in those countries consider themselves to be third world, many of them were considered first world during WWII because they were still ruled by England. So, no, this doesn't apply for today.
