Can't get my 1 year old to sleep

Could someone please help me with some effective measures to get him out of the rocking habit and help him learn to fall asleep on his own crib. Sleep time has become a nightmare for me these days as he is in a stage where he howls/ cries his heart out to be left alone or made to fall asleep by just lying next to him. He needs to be rocked on my lap all the time. It's draining and also very stressful. Save me !
