Is it rude??

Question

I thought baby showers are supposed to be private, intimate events. My uncle's wife left a voicemail that she was bringing her mother and sister to my shower. Mind you, I don't even know them. Plus, I can't hold anymore people at our venue. So I politely told her we have to save space for the friends and family. In other words, the people I actually INVITED and who already RSVP'd. Is it rude to bring extra people to this type of event? I just thought it was weird.

It's definitely rude for her to say she's bringing someone else. If she had ASKED, it wouldn't be rude. Unless she's paying for it, she doesn't get to add people to the guest list.

It's only rude if they don't bring gifts. Showers can be boring, esp if you don't know anyone there besides the mom to be. In your case I'd just tell her it's a venue issue, but I definitely don't think it's rude to bring an extra person or two.

Yes it is. Unless you've clearly stated that they can bring other people, it's incredibly rude. And especially if you're already struggling to fit in family members. Your aunt should know better.

With the restrictions of your venue I don't blame you at all. Personally I was expecting maybe 5-10 people for my shower. My mother in law is throwing it and I was worried at first then kinda felt like screw it since it will be so small. Now she's inviting a lot of random people and honestly I really dngaf mostly because I know there will at least be a couple there I can hide with if I need to and the more the merrier if they want to help my little one!

It's definitely rude. It's YOUR baby shower, I'd be so upset if someone did that and I'd tell her "No, I'm sorry but this is my baby shower and I need space for the people I invited"

I think it would have been rude to just show up with them without telling you first. She probably should have asked if they can come instead of leaving you a message that they were coming. Every shower is different. Some are just women and intimate affairs. I plan on having couples and kids and having a celebration party for ours and with ours the more the merrier.  But the ones that I've been to that are just women and smaller I don't think I would have ever just brought someone else with me. But hey, at least they called first so you could correct it? Still a pain, sorry they frustrated you. I wouldn't think they were trying to be rude, they just didn't do it the way you, and some common courtesy (asking instead of telling) would have liked. My dad just called and said my grandma invited my dad's aunts and cousins I've never met before. I'm not upset just because it means more gifts. If they start making me uncomfortable or acting hoe they shouldn't be I have no problem asking people to leave my shower 😊

It's rude in the sense of not asking and showing up with extra or assuming that it's ok to bring extra people. I think you handled it well just make sure she understands you don't have the room for extra people that you had not sent invites out to. That you appreciate them wanting to come and join the celebration of your baby but just can't have them their due to venue capacity issues.
