Should unpaid internships be illegal?

Savannah
I was talking to someone who works at a university. The field he teaches in requires a semester long field placement where the student will be working 32 hours a week at the place they were assigned. They won't receive pay, but instead, they'll pay tuition as they receive credit hours for their work. He was suggesting that this is unfair to students and further takes advantage of them, putting them more in debt. A lot of students need to work in order to go to school and the field placement takes up a lot of time and energy leaving it difficult for the students to work. He'd like to see unpaid internships as illegal and instead have students do a field placement after they earn their degree. They would get paid for their work and it would still be regulated by the University to ensure they are getting experience in the field. What do you think?
