I was just wondering could you give a six week old a little bit of water every now and then?

Absolutely not. It's toxic to their kidneys so young. By 6 months they can start having up to 2oz a day, but not before.

I read an article recently about a mother who killed her baby trying to stretch her formula by adding more water.

Yes. At least we did. My baby had problems pooping the first 2 months. I did everything, karo syrup, waiting, thermometer trick a few times, and finally the doctor said try some water. It worked great and now that she's older she has no problem. Some babies it just takes longer for them to use that muscle and that was her case. I would recommend it for this reason. Back in the day my mom said the hospital would send moms home with a case of glass baby bottles filled with water. I would say yes for pooping issues, of course after fully nursing or a feeding session.

My doctor said not to before the months.  But after two months, they can have 1-2 oz of water a day if you desire to give it but they don't need it.

My son started having sips of water from 11 days old. He wouldn't feed so gave him cooled boiled water to stop him dehydrating. We ended in hospital due to him not taking any feeds in 18 hours and the doctor told us we did the right thing to give him water and its fine to continue giving him it.
