Ob or GP?

Question

Is there a need to get an ob? 
I live in Australia and my GP hasn't even suggested it. I read somewhere that ob's are more for difficult/special case pregnancies. 
What do they do that's any different?

My understanding is that in Australia you go through your regular GP for the first 20 weeks (they send for for ultrasounds and tests and review the results) and then they refer you to your local hospital to see the midwives and OB there. I think you mainly deal with midwives thought it the whole process though.

I have always seen a regular OB and a perinatologist who is a high risk OB in the US

I'm not sure how things run in Australia but in the US...OBGYN's or Midwives are the only ones who deal with pregnancy (I think...plz correct me if I'm wrong).

My first two pregnancies I saw my family doctor- it was great I was comfortable with him etc. I ended up having to have c-sections.. which he couldn't do. My first pregnancy it was an emergency so I met the dr that minute. No problems at all! Second pregnancy I still saw my family doctor the whole time until the end and saw the same ob twice to set dates etc. This time my doctors office changes and no longer does ob. So I've seen the ob office from the beginning. I'm still drag (7 weeks 2 days) but so far I'm very pleased. I will get more ultrasounds than I would have at the ob and people who specialize in ob!

It just depends on their speciality. My general practitioner does not see women for pregnancy or deliver babies, so I see an OB. A midwife would be another option as well.
