birth control + unprotected sex

I have been on the pill for over a year. My boyfriend and I want to have unprotected sex but I'm scared that I could get pregnant. I know birth control isn't 100% affective, but I also know as long as I take them on time, everyday, which I do, I should be okay. Is it "safe" to have unprotected sex while on the pill or is it just as risky as not being on the pill?
