IVF-What you want to know
TMI WARNING
Here's the low-down-dirty-bits of IVF so far. Some of these I wish I'd know about and others I knew after asking. Some, I discovered.
1) ALL (and I mean all...from your very first one) of the ultrasounds are vaginal. Get used to it. It's not fun. It's not comfortable. But it doesn't hurt.
2) The sub-q shots aren't that bad. I'm the biggest weenie in the world and I was able to do it. They do get old pretty quick though. I was all excited to get started. Now day 5, I'm ready to be done, but I have 5-7 more days.
3) Get ready to wait. There is the consultation. Then you wait for Aunt Flow. Then you wait (and take OCPs) for your stims cycle to start. Then you wait for your 1st monitoring appointment. Then you wait for the next and next and so on. Then you wait for retrieval. Then you wait to see what develops. Then you wait for test results/transfer. You wait a lot.
4) The "trial transfer" sucks. You have to have a full bladder and it's uncomfortable & icky. The speculum is uncomfortable & then they igloos your uterus with saline. What comes up must go down...same here...what goes in must come out. The whole time you're laying there, feet in stirrups, fluid trickling, & bladder about to burst. Not painful, but defiantly not fun.
5) Most insurances DO NOT cover one red cent. Get ready to file for a loan!!!
6) GAS. It's a fact of life. It's a daily, hourly, sometimes minute fact during stims. Apologize ahead of time to family & coworkers.
7) Bloating sucks. My belly looks distended and it's super sore from the shots. Plus your usually visited by AF during the first part of stims. So, you're cramping, bloated and feel like a sore, hormonal pin cushion. You feel down right yucky!
8) Salty and sweet. I'm craving both...canned ravioli, chocolate, chips & dip, all the crummy foods.
9) If this works out, it'll be worth every poke, blood draw, ultrasound, and appointment!!!
Anyone have any others???
