My boyfriend doesn't really talk to me about anything important to him?!

My boyfriend isn't the wealthiest, and now that my mom is married we have a bit more money. I feel like he doesn't think he can talk to me about his family/money problems because I wouldn't get it. But that's the thing, I would. I know what it's like to live on ramen noodles every night. I know what it's like to barely pay bills and still have enough money at the end of the month for necessities. I just don't know what to do anymore.
