Am I a child of God?

I want to know about God and have a relationship with him but I do wrong (backslide) and I know what I'm doing I choose to do it. I fornicate and I lie and can be mean to others. But also I can be caring and concerned about others and have a big heart to give to others. If I am not a child of God how can I become one. *Comments please*
