Do I Ask For a Second Chance?

About five months ago the guy I had been dating for one year broke up with me out of the blue saying that he needed to work on himself and figure things out. Him and I rarely talk because talking to him right now still really hurts. Our relationship was long distance so it wasn't perfect during the school breaks, but at school we rarely ever fought. My question is that I still love him a lot and don't feel that my relationship story with him is finished. A lot of my friends say asking for a second chance would be worthless and that I deserve a lot better but I can't help but think that maybe there's a chance for another go at the relationship. Do I ask him? Do I wait longer? Or do I just try to completely move on?
