GENDER IDENTITY: Someone you should know: Audre Lorde
Black feminist, lesbian, poet, mother, and warrior Audre Lorde (1934-1992) was a native New Yorker and daughter of immigrants. In her activism and her published work, Lorde argued that people must organize across differences of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and ability.
One of her most famous lines comes from the epilogue of her book A Burst of Light:
“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
Her words continue to impact strong feminists today.
