new to Nuvaring

I just got perscrived nuvaring my doctor told me to wait to insert it until the 5th day of my cycle. But my cycle is extremely irregular and it might be a month or two until I get my period again but I want to be protected. So does anyone know why the wait until the 5th day is a suggestion and can putting it in when you're not on your period affect how well it works?
