what exactly is a single mother? what's your opinion?

Thank you for your opinions. This post was made because my brother and his girlfriend split up and she is on Facebook saying she's a single mother. My brother moved 200 miles from home and ALL of his family to be with his daughter. He knows no one in the town and is staying there even after they split up in order to see and provide for his daughter. He works full time and takes his daughter all the time and even pays some of the bills still. Though he's no longer in that home. To me, that does not make her a single mother. It just makes her a mother and she is single. 
My mother was a single mom because my dad was ghost for years. So it's offensive to claim that title when my brother is a dad always.

If you aren't with the father of your child but he helps 100% with time and money, are you a single mom?

Others say a single mom is a mother with no support or help from the biological father.

In my eyes a single mother is a mom who has no help. So if your babies father is there for you financially and sees his kids on the regular then you are not a single mother. A single mother is someone who has to solely provide for their child with no help from the father. Just my opinion though.

I would say it's a mother who isn't currently in a romantic relationship, with either the father or anyone else.

If you receive money from the father but he never actually takes the kid anywhere or looks after it by himself, you're a single mum.
If you've got shared custody and you both look after the kid financially and physically - you're a regular Mum/divorced Mum.

I honestly don't know but my best guess is:

A single woman is not in a serious romantic relationship with anyone but co-parents with her children's father

A single mom is a mother that parents without the assistance of the other parent and is not in a serious romantic relationship with anyone.

My mother received $125 allotment check every month from my father and without a doubt i would call her a single mother. Sending money doesn't negate the fact that you are not actively participating in your childs life.

I was a single mother. Bio dad went MIA for 5 years. My mom lives in another state. Just me and my 3. Remarried now so I don't claim that but I think people need to stop confusing single woman and single mother.

The level of involvement of the father doesn't enter into it.

If you're not in a committed relationship then you're a single mom in a sense. I do take issue with mothers who act foolish claiming "I'm a single mom" when they share custody and receive support. If both biological parents share time, responsibility and financial obligation I really can't tolerate the sob story. That's really not the case for many single parents so I find it offensive.

Too many mothers sit there and say they are single mothers. If the child's father is active (or even wants to be while the mother refuses to let them see their children) and pays you child support, you aren't single. You have another parent helping out with caring for the child both physically and financially. Also, claiming to be a single parent while they have a new significant other helping them. I know a chick who claimed to be a single mother, bad mouthing her ex (who's last name she still had btw) while he was going for custodial guardianship of their child, had her half of the year while paying child support whether she had her or he had her, she had a boyfriend, and lived with her parents her paid for everything and took care of her child. I think the title of single mother gets thrown around way too much
