Private Schools: legal segregation?

What are your thoughts on this article about white flight and public schools. I think that it is absolutely true that private schools are a way of keeping people out who can't afford to attend. Do you think private school vouchers and helping or hurting POC from receiving an equal education?

I went to a private school and there weren't a whole lot of us that weren't white, but we were all treated basically the same. Our school was divided mostly by money. The rich kids got what they wanted because their parents donated or taught there and would throw a fit, but the school even kept that pretty well under control.

I was valedictorian of my class because I took school seriously and didn't get caught up in the drama. The teachers and principal helped me get in too dual credit college classes.

I don't think private schools are the problem as much as people's mindsets. At least, my school didn't discriminate at all and I think everyone was given a fair shot.

I didn't read the whole thing. My ex and I sent our daughter to private school for 7yrs (grade 5-12) we were far from well off. I worked part time at Kohls and he sold cars. We didn't belong to a church and got zero discounts or scholarships. We paid full tuition every year all 7 yrs. Paid about $700mo not individual class expenses and lunches. We wanted it for our daughter and we made it happen.

What I have a problem with is public funding going to private schools. That money is for public schools and how are those schools suppose to educate students when they don't have the money. If the voucher program leads to more segregation then it needs to be dismantled, because many before us have fought so hard for the equal opportunity for children of color to afford the same education as others.

Taking money away so, that white families can place their child in a private school; while children of color still struggle is NASTY and DISTASTEFUL. I feel they need to get back to the basics. Fix the schools we do have, have better curriculums for the school; and provide more money for teachers and stop punishing the children for the ignorance of adults in power.

I went to private school from K-12, my high school was pretty diverse. Both my K-8 and high school offered financial assistance to families; my high school also offered scholarships. It is a stereotype that kids who go to private schools come from wealthy families.

I live in San Francisco and teach in the Tenderloin-- a rough neighborhood filled with immigrant families, the homeless, drugs, etc. There are two schools within this neighborhood that are private-- the tuition is either free or extremely low. These two schools are exclusively targeted towards low income families.

I know two former students of mine who both got accepted into an all boy high school that is a pretty good private school, they're able to attend due to scholarships and major financial assistance.

People will always find a way to exclude those they think are beneath them. Private schools are known for catering to upper class families and students and in turn it tends to act as a racial segregation as well. So I wouldn't say they're blatantly segregating their schools by race, it's just sorta implied with class.

I don't know how other private schools work in different areas but the one my children attend currently have large amounts of financial aid available to all and it's very easy to get.. those who reside in "poorer" neighborhoods and school districts that are below standard are given extra grant money to attend these private schools. The private high school that I attended even has a program called Crossroads which is specifically for POC.. often times they go to the school tuition free or at a much lower cost-depending on the family's means. I don't think private schools try to keep anyone out.. many private schools struggle tremendously because there are not enough students anymore. It wouldn't make sense for them to not want certain people there in my opinion- The more the better. Now these are parochial private schools that I speak of because I don't have much knowledge of how the other private schools work. We live in a rather "wealthy" neighborhood with a well off public school district.. we chose to send our kids to their private school because of it's religious affiliation. This private school they attend is in a nearby neighborhood with a public school district that is well below standard. Many children of all races attend the same school as my kids because their families seek the better opportunities than what the public schools have to offer at this point. I think the private schools here are currently doing the best they can to make sure everyone has the ability to attend.
