Will a natural labor progress more quickly if you remain relaxed and calm?

I spent early labor at home on the sofa after eating a nice breakfast. My contractions were definitely noticeable but they weren't so painful I couldn't handle them, and I was generally very relaxed. After about 3 hours at home my fiancé said he thought we needed to go to the hospital even though the pattern wasn't the classic 1 min with 5 min between for an hour.

At the hospital they said I was dilated enough to be admitted and that even though they hadn't been "classic", my contractions had been very effective. Baby came 2.5 hours later, an unmedicated, relaxed, water birth.

Yes. Have you heard of the pain/tension/fear cycle? It's why if you go to the hospital too early you can stall labor out...you get an adrenalin rush...your muscles tense up, when they tense you feel more pain, when you feel more pain you become more fearful which in turn leads to tensing your muscles more.....and they cycle continues. That's why it's also recommended to change labor positions every 30-45 min...so those muscles don't become tense...

I used a program called Hypnobabies. I highly recommend it. You just learn to completely relax and tune everything out and time just flew by. You can find free hypnotherapy videos on YouTube and stuff too. I love it personally just for everyday relaxation as well

That's what I learned and practiced throughout my entire first pregnancy, but I was still in labor 24 hours. 12 of which I was at 3 centimeters the entire time. Probably partially that it was my first baby and partially every labor is different. But staying calm and learning to relax is beneficial no matter what. It helped time go by quickly for me. Even though it was 24 hours, it definitely didn't feel like it.
