First-time Nair user

Hi guys...so today I used Nair for the first time and I followed the directions completely. I kept it on for about 5 minutes for the courser hair (downstairs). When I used the sponge to try to remove the hair I felt the worst burning sensation throughout that area and when I got out of the shower it was all red and inflamed. Is this normal or am I reacting to it? I feel like I shouldn't be in this much pain an hour after using it. If anyone has any advice on what to do/ how to treat please please share!
