Would you be okay with your children calling their step parent mom or dad?

As long as it was the child's decision and not forced on them.

My husband and I have been together a little over 2 years. My oldest was abt 4.5 and my youngest was 1.5 when we started dating. My exhusband is still very involved in their lives and is also remarried.  Their step mom is amazing! But for her she was never ok with them calling her mom. If they did on acci6she would correct them. Now at our house my oldest has always called my hubby by his first name, always. And that has been fine. My youngest wasn't speaking much at all when we got together and we had custody of my step son who called me mom from the start (he has special needs caused by trauma from his mother when he was younger), well my step son kept calling my hubby by his name Kevin because that is what my oldest called him. So we had to be very consistent to get him to understand that was daddy for him. So naturally my youngest started to call him daddy also. Now that my youngest is 3.5 he uses daddy or Kevin interchangeably, and my hubby is getting used to it. He was raised by his stepfather his entire life and has always called him his dad. So for him that is just normal.

But to each their own. There are so many different kinds of families out there and I think labels don't really matter as long as you love your children then you are family. Not step, not half, not blended, just family.

As long as he wanted to call them that. I'm all about making my son feel as comfortable as possible.

If the talk about them as step I get that. It would be awkward to directly refer to them that way. So Mom or dad makes sense. The caveat is it should be child lead not required or forced. It should be solely left up to the child. I have no respect for parents or stepparents who demand  it. I think biological parents that are upset with it need to go scratch. I am a stepmom. Mine calls me mom, momma or big momma. She always calls her mom mommy. She initially called me by name. About 2 years in started calling me Mom herself. Her mom found out and pitched a fit. I have never asked or required. About a year later she watched Big Mommas House and started calling me Big Momma. It eventually evolved back to mom. Her mom refers to me as Miss So & So or even Aunt So & So. She sounds dumb. You don't want your kid to potentially call someone else Mom or dad? Don't break up

Yes, as long as they wanted to. I've had step parents since I was 11 so that relationship is just normal to me but I've never personally wanted to call one mom or dad.

I think it's up to the kid and the step parent. My step kids call me by my first name and I don't think I would want them to call me mom, it would just make me feel weird and I think it would be weird for them too. They were also older when I met them not babies, so I think that plays a role too.

i mean if i was divorced and with another guy and got married with him , maybe i can let them call him dad... but if i was just dating and not married then no i wouldn't...
