Midwife or doctor?

Which did you use? Pros and cons? Can't decide!

I had a ob Dr and I love her. She was very informed and was on the same page as I was for how I wanted the birth. I think it's important that if you go with a dr find one that is going to have the same beliefs as you. My hospital had all the options for medicated and unmedicated births and even water births

Doctor they seem to be more prepared and informed if things go wrong. I had a midwife then had to switch to a doctor because I became high risk and the doctor was so much more informed made me feel so much safer.

I had an Obgyn for my 1st and am using the same doc for this pregnancy. Love him! I feel completely safe in his care. Thats my 2 cents lol.

If you're low risk and you believe that pregnancy is not a condition that needs to be managed a midwife is definitely the way to go. On OB is a surgeon. They're not trained to understand pregnancy as a normal process.

That said there's different types of midwives. You'll need to figure out that kind you're comfortable with and if they're legal where you live.

My first pregnancy I had CNMs overseen by an OB. I absolutely hated it and my care was incredibly fear based. The entire time I had to prove I wasn't high risk. They told me every complication as if it absolutely would happen to me. I'm now with a CPM and the care couldn't be more different. My CPM treats me like a capable person. She speaks to me, not at me. My appointments are as long as I need them to be. I am given informed consent and given the chance to make my own decision. That didn't happen before.

Doctor. I've been with the same practice for at least 12 years & they delievered my neice & nephew & ton of my friends kids so I never even looked for anyone else

Midwife. I did a midwife team at a birth center with my first but had birth complications and needed to be transferred to the hospital. So this time I went with a midwife team at the hospital, so I feel like I get the best of both. They're much more relaxed about pregnancy and keep it a very happy and easy time. So much easier to talk to and work with than a doctor in my opinion.

Midwife all the way.they are very well qualified and educated and are kinder. They give you more time at your appointments and answer you questions thoroughly

I plan to do both! I absolutely LOVE my obgyn and I trust her opinion, so I want it to be her that follows me through my pregnancy. However, we have a fantastic birthing center near my home that is calling my name. It is such a more calm and homey setting than a hospital. Luckily, it is connected to a huge hospital, so the midwives at the birthing center work with your obgyn to make sure your birth follows your birth plan as closely as possible, but at the same time you and baby stay safe. If you need to go over to the hospital, then send you on over and your obgyn steps in! I'm also afraid that I am too attached to my obgyn. I know myself well enough that I think if I Would have decided to have her deliver me, I would be absolutely devastated if she was unable to for some reason (doctors can't be around all the time!). I like having a plan that allows me to be more mentally flexible. It's good for my sanity!

I used a family medicine OB with my first pregnancy, kind of had mixed feelings. She was very nice, but always seemed rushed, hard to get an appointment with, and ended up not being in town when I delivered. Not her fault, I know, but I chose family medicine over straight OB because I was told the doctor would be called in when I went into labor as opposed to them calling the on-call OB. I didn't love the idea of not knowing the doctor and the doctor not knowing me but I ended up with a stranger anyway. This time around I'm going to try out a midwife team - I think there are 7 total, and I'll rotate through them throughout the pregnancy so that I'll know whoever is on call the day I go into labor. Theoretically, anyway... we'll see. I'm hoping for a natural birth, so I'll see whoever is most likely to support me in that.
