IUD??

Question

My doctor is recommending one, I smoke, I have a thyroid problem (hyperthyroidism) and my blood pressure is slightly elevated. She said the IUD would be the best choice. However I've heard a lot of bad thing about it. Have you ever had one? Love it? Hate it? Side effects? Bad experience?

I had the Skyla IUD for 2.5 years and I loved it... no maintenance no side effects. The first 3 months were a little rough with spotting but after that I bled maybe one day a month and it was barely anything. 
Insertion was a little uncomfortable with the cramping but having it removed was painless. 
I will be getting one again after I get pregnant.

I've had the Marina for 1.5 years and love it. Its all in knowing your body and knowing when something isnt right. I've had friends that had it and hated it and tryed talking me out of it. I did lots of research and decided i would try it and if i didn't like it i would just tell them to take it out. Keep in mind that an IUD is still not 100% effective. And you can still get pregnant on it. I know a couple of people that have conceived with it. I have only had one issue and it was that i couldn't find the string. I went to er and it was were it needed to be but pushed up because i was "constipated." They gave me meds and after i wasn't constipated anymore i could find the string again. 
If you get it just remember to do your monthly string check and stay in tune with your body to know if any issues have come about and if you feel something isn't right go to the er or your dr just to get checked or

I love it. I stopped getting my period for a month and a half. 2 things to watch out for. When I first got the iud in, I got my period non stop for weeks. Then it went away completely. I read online this is normal. Also you need to watch for infections like bacterial vagionis. Girls w iud are more likely to get them. But remember the iud is one if not the most effective birth control. It takes a 5 min procedure and lasts for years! And you don't have to take a pill every day

All birth control options have horror stories. My friends mom almost died because she smoked on the pill. No medication or medical procedure is risk free. Non hormonal birth control would work best for you considering your health profile. There's a non hormonal iud that I've known folks who've had it and loved it.
