My son would only stay sleep on his tummy when he was that age. I just made sure that he didn't have anything hazardous in his crib like blankets or stuffed animals & I checked on him often. . I know that the peds say that it's unsafe but that's what worked for us. We both got decent rest.

Recommended sleeping positions actually change every 10 years or so.  "They" request children to sleep on their backs or sides.  We tend nor to allow children to sleep on the stomach until they are over a year.

My son refuses to lay on his back to sleep he will literally scream till I pick him up and he won't sleep but if he's on his tummy he will sleep thru the night

The problem with sleeping on their tummy is it increases their chance of suffocating & SIDS because they can fall in too deep of a sleep. They also are more likely to breathe in what they need to exhale.  And they don't have enough muscle to move themselves.

I don't remember when exactly mine started rolling over..but when he figured it out, he would only sleep on his stomach. I'd freak out (ftm) and put him on his back..just to check on him an hour later..flipped back over on his belly. Eventually, I just let him be, but that was WAAAY after he could roll back to front and front to back unassisted.
