Whats An IUD?

I keep hearing about it but im unsure of what it actually is?

Intrauterine Device. It's a T shape device that gets inserted into the uterus. The cervix is dilated a bit and the IUD is put in the uterus. I have the paragard, which is the copper non hormonal IUD, it hurt when it was put in, bad cramping  that felt similar to labor contractions. It was a quick procedure though, a couple minutes. Some people complain that cramps are worse and bleeding is heavier after having an IUD placed, that's not the case for me though, my cramps are bad right before my period but I have no cramps during by period and my bleeding is lighter. I also can't feel my IUD. The paragard works because the coppers makes sperm not be able to move properly, and unable to fertilize the egg..if the sperm manages to fertilize the egg, the T shape helps prevent it from implanting. This is how my midwife explained it to me.

I had the Paragard for 2.5 years and I loved it. It did hurt the day it was out in but anytime you put something foreign into your uterus you risk the chance of contractions. The first 6 months I did have a little heavier of a period but after that it calmed down. It won't fall out if the doctor knows what they are doing and puts it in right. I work for an OB and have watched her put in many IUD's. Mirena is another one that many women use, the difference between the two is that Mirena has hormones. I found it a great way to protect myself from pregnancy until I was ready and not have to worry about forgetting a pill or remembering to go get a shot. Worked great for me. It came out with no problems and I got pregnant within 8 mos. I did end up having a mc but I believe it was in no way related to the IUD. I am now 27 weeks with my raknbow baby. I would definitely go the IUD route in the future. Hope this was informative!
