is our relationship legit?

And we're dating yea but he's only told close friends and he doesn't have any pictures of us on social media or even changed his status.

Like he's not afraid to hug me or bug me in public. And he does things that kinda show that he's not just in it for sex but idk. 

When I ask why he doesn't wanna change it he says that all his friends in the city, (hood friends, and other ppl on his fb friends) will try and hit me up if they see me. And sometimes when they add me on Facebook and I tell him he complains that it's because we're dating. He's told me his last gf was messing around before they broke up so maybe that's why but idk if he's lieing or telling the truth. Sorry if this is a long story but I just need another opinion.
