effaced? dilated?

Whats "effaced"? And can people really be dilated several weeks before due date? Because im reading both these things on here recently.

Answer

Effaced means how thick or thin the cervix is.  Think of a bagel when you cut it in half to put the cream cheese.  It's thinner when u cut it by half.  Dilation is when the whole in the middle gets bigger.   U can be dilated for several weeks before actually giving birth.  The body weeks before the due date needs to start getting ready and with the pressure of the head as it drops and puts pressure starts to cause cervical changes.  All normal.

I was 2 cm dilated and 80% effaced at 27 weeks with my first...at my 36 week appointment I was 6 cm dilated.
