Should we stay friends?

So my boyfriend of 3 ½ years recently broke up with me. I go to school 9 hours away and it's just too far for him.  He says he still loves me and always will. He thinks that in a year or 2 he'll probably really regret his decision, and want to get back together. He just thinks this is what's best for the both of us.  He would like for us to remain friends. I really want to, but I don't know if it's the best decision.  I know I will never be able to get over him if we're friends, and even though there's a high probability that he will change his mind it's not guaranteed.  Any advice?

No, don't stay friends. The fact that he's saying "oh in two years, maybe we can be together" is such bs. You should move on and not spend years waiting on someone who may never come back and even if they do, you don't deserve that. You deserve someone who wants to be with you NOW, not years from now.

You don't need to stay friends. Me judging this is because you say it will make it hard on you to move on! DONT do that to yourself! He odviously wants different and you're in college it will give you more time to experience things as well make a wider range of friends have more time to do you instead of worrying about a bf that's 9 hours away as I know that is stressful.

I'm sorry but he "thinks" he'll regret it??? If he really thought that he wouldn't be breaking up with you to begin with. I feel like he's just telling you that so that you don't move on from him in case he decides he wants you back after he's had his fun for the next year or two. I personally wouldn't stay friends with him. Move on, you deserve someone who wants you now, not later.

Distance is always hard on some couples. I think he might have made the best decision for the both of you if you guys don't see each other a lot. And the Two years down the road could means once your done with school. I think staying friends with your ex is fine (i do it) if it was not a messy break up such as yours. Some people's are better friends then lovers and vice versa. If you guys were in a good relationship that was easy going I think he is just a little lonesome. It can really go both ways, how I put it or the way the girl put it in the message above mines. But I think u won't miss it on anything if you just try it out for size.😊

Take 3 to 6 months, get some space, let yourself get over him. Then if you miss him as a friend and you'd be ok being friends even if you never get back together, you can reach out. Some people really enjoy staying friends with their exes, but often it's impossible to get over someone without time and space apart from them.

I would make it a clean break so you can move on and heal. Him changing his mind and wanting to be friends sounds like he wants to keep you on the back burner in case he doesn't find anyone else closer. Who knows, maybe you'll find your way back to each other eventually, but for now, you need to heal and focus on yourself.
