How do midwives work?

I have thought about working with a midwife but I am unsure of how they affect my current ob/gyn "treatment". I really like my ob and would hate to not see her but I plan on going the more natural route (like no epihdural, but still deliver at a hospital) so I didn't know if I should see a midwife.

Can I only use one or the other? Or do they kind of work in tantum with me throughout my pregnancy?

You cannot have both a midwife and obstetrician attend your birth. You'd have to choose. Not every midwife can deliver at a hospital. Best bet would be to call your hospital and ask if any midwives have privileges there

It really depends on your location and if midwives in your area attend hospital births.

I have had OBs and midwives over the course of my five children. Hands down, love my midwives. I will never birth with an OB again.

The midwifery practice I see delivers in the hospital. There is also a freestanding birth center in the same city (an hour from me). Those midwives see patients and patients birth in the birth center.

Some OBs work with midwives on their practice and low risk mom's can be seen by  and deliver with the midwives.

I suggest doing a lot of research about models of care (what model is more your style), as well as what options you have as far as providers. Also check hospital policies to see what is allowed and who has admitting privileges at the hospital you are delivering at.

Following because I love my OB and the facility to go to now, but also want to birth at a midwife center only if everything is 100%, otherwise I'm okay with a hospital birth and no epidural
