weight loss

My boyfriend is 50-40 pounds over weight and he wants me to help him lose it. I suggested he do a high protein low carb diet, mostly water, and we are going to work out together. I'm wanting to tone up my stomach I have a little chub but I'm almost under weight he has quite a bit of chub and is over weight he wants to first get healthy then work on toning up.  He is 17 I'm 16. I love him the way he is but we are both worried about his health both mentally and physically and his family makes fun of him so Anyone have any advice for us?
