FGM....

Hayleigh
FGM (Female Genital Mutilation or Female Circumcision) is something that I am so passionate about and I think it needs so much more awareness. There are 3 types of FGM:
Type 1: the pricking of the clitoris to make it bleed. Or the partial or the complete removal of the clitoris.
Type 2: The partial or complete removal of the clitoris as well as the removal of the labia minora (inner lips of the vagina).
Type 3: The partial removal of the clitoris, labia minora, labia majora (outter lips). The spare skin is then sewn up to leave a tiny hole in which the girl/woman is meant to urinate from, menstrate from, have intercouse and give birth.
This happens so often, not only in countries in Africa or Asia, but it happens where you live. In the USA, New Zealand, the UK.. the list goes on. We go to school alongside girls who have survived FGM, we work with women who have survived FGM. It's time for women to stand up for each other and allow women who have survived FGM to speak out and not be stigmatised.
We need to do so much more to stop our girls from being forced to have this barbaric, dangerous, unnecessary procedure done. It is something every woman, man, girl and boy should know about so we can empower our future generations in order to stop this for good.
