9 month blood draw

Kelly

At our 9 month appointment today they wanted to test her iron and lead levels (lead levels in my area are higher and I live in an older home). I was thinking this blood draw should go pretty smoothly given that they draw babies blood all day. Well it didn't. As soon as they put the tourniquet on my lo she started crying. While I tried my best to hold her still, kicking and screaming the lab tech missed the vein. I calm the baby down and let her try again.

She gets everything ready and I hold my lo down again with her right arm out this time. The lab tech takes the same alcohol pad she wiped her left arm with and wipes her right arm for the 2nd attempt. So I stop her, I take the tourniquet off and leave the lab. I ask to speak with the nurse manager and told her what happened she says I was right and next time ask for her and she will draw the blood herself. So I told her I was willing to let her try. We go back to the lab right from her office. She gets everything ready puts on the tourniquet while I again hold my baby down. She wipes the right arm and then I notice she ripped the finger of her glove so she could feel the vein. Wtf is wrong with these people? She didn't even wash her hands before putting on the gloves so its not even a clean finger. You can't touch the area after u clean it with alcohol. As soon as she started feeling the vein and was about the put the needle in I stopped her and left.. I'll be going to a lab that follows proper procedure and reporting these techs to the hospital.
