Some Birth Control Info

I've noticed some people on this app and in real life are mistakenly thinking birth controls are abortifacients. This is entirely untrue, and you can confirm with any health professional. Hormonal birth controls work by stopping ovulation using synthetic hormones. For instance, the implant uses progestin, a synthetic progesterone that tricks your body into thinking it has already ovulated, so you don't do it again. By releasing steady amounts of progestin, the implant mimics the progesterone rise at the end of your cycle, signaling that ovulation has already occurred. The copper IUD works by releasing copper ions, which is toxic to sperm and other foreign bodies. Copper is a well known antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral metal, and its distruption of environment doesn't exclude sperm. And just like any foreign body, your body's cells will then absorb the dead sperm (just like it would if you used no form of contraception). Spermicides are also NOT abortifacients. They work by killing sperm in the vagina, preventing sperm from entering the uterus. Barrier methods such as condoms, diaphragms, sponges, cervical caps, and female condoms all prevent pregnancy by physically stopping sperm from reaching the uterus. They are not abortifacients. I hope this helps anyone who was confused about how contraceptives work.
