Pediatrician? Clueless FTM

Question

Don't know why I'm just now thinking of this; but I'm a FTM in the US and wondering when should I be calling a pediatrician? Due in 5 days. Do I need to call now to see if they accept new patients or do I wait and call to make an appointment once she is born?

At my hospital you pick when you are admitted to the hospital. They call that doctor and they come see your baby after they are born. I would call your hospital and ask how they do it or the office you think you will use for a pediatrician.

It depends on the hospital you give birth at. One hospital I was looking at requires you to have one before you give birth. The one I'm going to now I was told by the pediatrician's staff that after the babies are born is when I call them and make an appointment. But the hospital doesn't let you leave with the baby until you've made that appointment.

They told us to make that decision before the baby was born but we had so much going on before he was born we ended up deciding when we were in the hospital. They had a pediatrician come in and see him and we really liked her so we went to he office she worked at and tried a couple different doctors there before we picked one for him, the one in the hospital was very popular so we never got to see her again unfortunately. Also if you know people with kids ask friends and family different experiences and offices they went to to help out. It helped us a lot because we had no idea where to start looking
