Why do some women get induced?

Is out of choice or purely a medical emergency? Who decides? The doc or patient? Asking for info, no judging. I notice alot of women post on here about getting induces at 37-38 weeks. Just wondering how that decision came about

I'm in the UK and here you can't be induced for anything other than medical reasons. Eg. Preeclampsia or being at least 12 days over due. 
I think in the US it is really common to be induced for the sake of the doctor wanting too.

I'm from the US and I was induced at 39 weeks because my son was due on Christmas Eve and my Dr asked if I wanted to be home with a newborn instead and me being young and a ftm I thought that was fine. So for us it was a matter of convenience but with this pregnancy I don't want to induce unless for medical reasons. I don't like the idea now that I chose to take my first before he was ready on his own.

My dr only induces healthy pregnancies at 10 days past due date. My SIL was induced at 38 wks because she was uncormfortable 🙄 so she asked and her dr let her

With my daughter I was induced at 41 weeks because by then they can poop in the womb. And my daughter did. This time I'm getting induced by at least 39 weeks because I have GD. My baby is already measuring over 9lbs And my not even 38 weeks.

I was induced once because she wasn't coming on her own. However, at 38 weeks, my doctor gives you the option to be induced if you want.
