Do you believe people 65 and older should have to retake their drivers test?

Question

I personally think they should. Sometimes when I tell people this they ask "how would you feel if you had your license for almost 50 years and had to retake the test?!" And my answer has always been that if I'm putting myself and others in harms way because I can't see or hear well enough to drive then I'd be more than okay with taking the bus or having a family member drive me. What are your opinions?  (The last answer I had to shorten but pretty much it means they should only have to retake the test if they have to or have caused an accident.)

Abso-fucking-lutely. I live in South Florida. You'd be surprised with all the stuff 65+ yr olds get away with on the roads because they're old. Driving drunk, no seatbelts, doing 25 in a 45, or the complete opposite, harrassing other drivers on the road, swerving into occupied lanes, not using their turn signals, making a left turn from the right lane 3 lanes away, on the phone or doing their makeup, skipping stop signs and traffic signals, all while they can hardly see or hear what's going on around them and honestly can't be bothered to because the world revolves around them apparently 🙄

Only if they have an accident where they are at fault. Maybe 80+ mandatory. Also teenagers texting and messing around in cars scares me far more than an old lady going 30km/h

ABSOLUTELY. My family is trying to take my grandmothers lisense away because she causes a lot of accidents but there really isn't much we can do. We want her to retake the test but it's not like you can force her.

As you age your reaction times slow and you will eventually be one a dangerous driver. Even a sixty five you can be a danger. My MIL had an accident last year when she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the break. It took her a few seconds to react and in that time she ran through a fence. Thankfully no one was hurt but if a child had been standing on the other side of that fence he would likely be dead. We all thought she was perfectly safe driving before that and of it weren't for the accident we would still think that and she could seriously hurt herself/others. A full driving test (three point turns, parallel parking etc) seems unnecessary but a reaction speed test is essential.

Where I am it is law that at 65 have to take the drivers test again and then every 5 years until they hit 75 which becomes every year.

I can tell you both my parents just barely passed. Truthfully my father shouldn't even be on the road any longer. For some drivers they should have to take it every year after hitting 65 (see people like my father)

Yes. Some of these older folks really can't drive anymore. They'll run through lights, drive painfully slow causing traffic to back up and won't obey traffic laws. All they're doing is causing accidents and putting other in danger.

I've always said after 30 we should have to retake it every 10 years. You just develop too many bad habits, forget some rules and some change.

I think people should be retested every 10 years or less. Full road test, not just a stupid competency test. So many idiots on the road
