what the fuck nursing home
My dad is dying of liver cancer right now. He's on hospice care. The goal of hospice is to keep the patient out of the hospital at all costs. If there's a problem, the nursing home/family/caregiver should call hospice to determine the best course of action. He transferred from his assisted living to the attached nursing home today. He's normally confused but not belligerent. He transferred there and all seemed to be going well.
A few hours later I get a call from the nursing home.. it went something like this
"Hi Danielle. I'm the nurse here with your dad. He's being very verbally aggressive and physically too so we need to send him out for a psych eval"
"Ummm... a psych eval? He has dementia and he's dying and on hospice. He doesn't need a psych eval... did you give him the haldol (an antipsychotic used for hospice patients who become combative, delusional etc)?"
"Ummmm no. I gave him his xanax and pain meds and it just made him have more energy."
"Did you call hospice?"
"Yes. They are going to call me back"
"Can you wait until I get there? He is not supposed to go to a hospital. That's the opposite of what we want. Please don't send him there. He's not mentally ill. He's dying and has dementia."
"We already called 911 and they took him away... he's going to XYZ hospital."
"WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? YOU SENT A DYING MAN TO A PSYCH UNIT? YOURE SUPPOSED TO KNOW HOW TO DO YOUR FUCKING JOB AND TAKE CARE OF PATIENTS WITH DEMENTIA. FUCK FUCK FUCK YOU HAVE THE DOCTOR ON CALL CALL ME RIGHT FUCKING NOW OR IM COMING DOWN THERE TO MAKE YOUR LIFE A LIVING HELL. FUCK FUCK FUCKITY FUCK FUCK x100"
Sooooo I called XYZ hospital. They had no record of him going there. The nurse had no idea where the ambulance was taking him.
Turns out they took him to the er. Didn't send any info with him. No medical history. No nothing. The hospital didn't know he was on hospice so they drew blood, gave an IV, did a bunch of tests. All because of an incompetent fucking dip shit nurse who doesn't know the concept behind hospice or what meds to give a patient EVEN THOUGH THE ORDERS WERE RIGHT FUCKING THERE!!!!
AS IF I DONT FEEL BAD ENOUGH FOR HAVING TO PUT HIM IN A NURSING HOME SHE HAD THE AUDACITY TO TELL ME "YOU TOOK HIM AWAY FROM HIS WIFE AND HES CONFUSED AND YOU TOOK HIM FROM EVERYTHING HE KNOWS."

This rant was brought to you by a grieving woman who has had 4 hours of sleep in the last 24 hours and has a 10 month old son and 2 parents who are dying. LIFE. FUCKING. SUCKS.
Edit: the er nurse and doctor said that while he was confused and paranoid on arrival, he was not belligerent and aggressive. He was having delusions that people were trying to hurt him.
